Bio: Charles A. Coleman, Jr., Ph.D.

As the Managing Director and Senior Strategist of SAS Institute's Education and Medical/Healthcare Practice, Dr. Charles Coleman brings an impressive vision and expertise to the design and implementation of SAS solutions within the education and healthcare industry sectors.

Responsible for the design and implementation of SAS's Digital Campus initiative, Charles and his team work closely with SAS R&D to provision SAS technologies for use on campuses and within academic medical and research centers. SAS's Digital Campus technology enables educational institutions (administrators, faculty and students) and academic medical research centers to readily access and utilize the entire array of SAS's statistical tools and analytic and research discovery solutions through direct digital software provisioning over campus-wide federated networks and grid infrastructure. In addition to providing local, on-campus access and use of SAS software, SAS's Digital Campus also provides remotely hosted and supported computational "workbenches," which also include all of SAS's software applications, but are rendered for use in a secure, on-demand manner for clients in public and private education and researchers worldwide via the Internet.

Prior to coming to SAS in 2004, Charles was the Director or Global IT for Red Hat, the premier Open Source Linux product and services provider, where he designed and implemented Red Hat's ERP, MRP, and CRM solutions as well as Red Hat's digital download, ASP and eCommerce engines. In addition, as the Director of Business Intelligence, Charles headed up a multi-disciplinary team comprised of marketing, sales, engineering, finance, and product development which created and implemented the world's first corporate-wide Business Intelligence solution built on Red Hat Server technology.

Charles's technology background also includes extensive experience is managing the implementation of clinical workflow and outcomes-based disease reporting, specifically in hematology and radiation oncology for the US Navy's Medical Center, Portsmouth. Having also worked for IDG by virtue of having sold his database marketing company to Computerworld, Charles has designed and implemented smart sales and marketing automation systems for more than 100 Fortune 1000 companies, primarily in the financial services, technology and pharmaceutical industries.

A graduate of the State University of New York at Binghamton, Charles received his Ph.D. based in part on his distinguished dissertation, which was published by Harper and Row in 1980 as the critically-acclaimed novel, Sergeant Back Again.
